ok... this isn't working out for me.
Has anyone removed this bastard?

It has 8 holes presumably for the tool(s) that I don't own

I have been cutting pieces of coat hanger and wedging it in there but this thing is solid as a rock!!!

Maybe it is... Stop! Hammer time!!! :D

You definately have the right idea. Those holse are the right way to get the thing out. And while there are indeed 'proper' tools for the job, bits of coathanger should do it. Maybe get a grinder and round the ends off or something.

But you are definately doing the right thing.

Maybe post a pic though, just so I can be sure.

Yep - That bastard finally came out :D

I struggled with the coat hangers for about an hour and a half and gave up.
Drove the car to the audio store this morning where they cracked out the correct tool and it was out in about 3 seconds.

Next person searching this forum with the same problem... get hold of the special tool. They look like this...

Yeah, they lock into the stereo so you only need to stick em in, then pull em out... The stereo comes out with them.

I have a few sets of them... Haven't used them in a while though.

I was also told that coat hangers worked, but found they bent too easily and weren't strong enough to push the spring-loaded tabs. After expanding my vocabulary, I finally drove to the local autoparts store and bought a pair of those hoops for < $5. They must work on a host of other OEM stereos too, because friends are always borrowing them.

Standard Eurovox tool... Has been used for about 15-20 years by that company. That is the company that did a lot of factory stereos for a lot of manufacturers over the years... Including Mazda, Ford, Holden, Audi, Merc, BMW and plenty more.

Mazda went so far as to adopt this mounting system for a whole generation of cars... no matter who supplied the stereo.
