After lots of investigative work I was able to find the rattle comes from the outer body of the damper resonanting on the inner shaft, just go to bunnings and buy a plumbing washer kit, comes shrink-wrapped on a yellow piece of cardboard, while there go get some bolts and matching nyloc nuts 'cause the ones that come with it are shit!
