View Full Version : Can KN RF420's be swapped directly?

I've read a few topics regarding the RF420s, but they don't really say whether they can be used on a stock motor. OK, dumb question for those who know, but can they be swapped for a std turbo pack and would the car run/perform like a std FD? Or would you need upgrades to various bits of kit to even make these run?
Cheers!

You will increase the amount of air at any given boost level (Increased VE) as such you will need a tune to correct AFR to prevent engine going bang!....however apart from physically bolting them on, you should have nothing else to worry about.
Of course the factory intercooler, exhaust, and fuel system will prevent you getting any real performance out of them.

My KnightSports Were Tuned and Tested at up to 1.45 Bar or 21 psi.

To support this I had to upgrade

- Fuel Injectors 4 x 850
- Fuel Pump, Fuel Reg
- Added HKS TwinSpark
- Upgraded SMIC
- Upgraded Radiator
- Full 3.5 Inch Exchaust System

I also went ahead and did Parallel conversion.

So you could just bolt them up, but you would probably find
yourself running out of fuel perhaps even below 14 - 15 psi.

So what ended up being the deal with the KN's - are they now unavailable ... is there an alternative supply .. ?

KnightSports are not making them presently deemed to be
too high a labour cost and cost effective quality donor
cores are getting harder to source.

There must be a number in circulation though.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm pretty sure my turbo pack is knackered, and just assessing options. Try to get them looked at again or see whether there is another option. I've found a virtually new set of 420's and a supplier of new ones, who both say that they can be fitted as a direct replacement and if I am not after any more power, then I do not need to change anything. Bearing in mind the car is 100% standard series 8 (SpiritR), I am after some advice whether this would be a good move or not. It seems almost impossible to find a used good set of standard twins (or even brand new for that matter!).

So if I am not after any more power, from Crayus's post, it would seem that they are a physical swap, but not necessarily a direct "tune" swap (if that makes sense!). Just confused, as there are so many opinions around!

And the guy who is selling the new KS packs, said that KS are still making the 420's, as he buys them direct. So again, another opinion that is different to what others have said in several topics on this forum!

:confused::confused:

Just to give everyone a bit more info on the RF420`s,

Basically the manafacturer of the exhaust turbines/shafts have gone out of business/no longer operating as far as i am aware, currently Knightsports are in the process / discussing business with Garrett for the manafacture of the shafts.
this is the only holdup with them, the rest of the parts are not a problem.

Myself and alot of people are waiting for these to be available again as they are a superior set of turbochargers...
So hopefully it wont be long until production will start...

Oh and by the way i am the Australian distributor for Knightsports incase people dont know, feel free to email me any questions info@revs-online.com

You can also visit www.knightsports.com.au (http://www.knightsports.com.au) for our online english catalogue.
