Hey, guys. Anyone here picked up a Petit Racing AST as oppossed to, say RE-Amemiya? Seems the Petit unit represents good value. Thinking about buying one... what do you reckon?

First thing you need to do with them, is throw out the cap, cos apparently they are junk (the pettit ones) --- and then to make matters worse, I believe they use a different size neck, so normal caps don't work or something.
I PM'ed a guy called Kinetic on the mother forum and bought his Ali ASTs, that he hand makes..... arrived about 1 - 2 weeks later, was a little cheaper than the pettit one, uses a standard filler neck, has the lower hole restriction, and most importantly the workmanship is absolutely amazing...
He does them in a variety of finishes.. I got mine polished, but he does black ones for the stealth look too....
I really can't recommend his stuff enough

Im Pettit's Euro dealer for FD parts. Im not sure what the problems are with the caps as I've sold loads of AST's in the past, used mine for over 5 years and never had any problems...:)

At the end of the day it's just an aluminum can nothing technical about it....so long as it's FD specific for ease of installation then just buy the one that suits you price wise/look etc.

i agree but if there is a problem with the pressure cap, then its not worth it.. better get one that has been tried and tested and is know that works...
altho i think this might turn into one of those endless "its good/its bad" debates :)

To be fair to them, it is heresay on my part...... but I did read some posts about the cap on the mother forum..... I guess a search on there will turn up what exactly is the issue...
but yeh... at the end of the day it is just an aluminium can :)
edit: Out of curiosity, what is the pressure of the cap on the pettit can? is it stock, or raised pressure like the apexi racing caps etc?
some silly blonde at sandy's decided to randomly open my AST cap for fun... and said she thought it was an oil catch tank
i wanted to shoot her
sorry... random.. oh well :)

I'm running a petit AST, doesn't seem to be an issue, and from memory it's 1.3 bar
I'll check when i get home and update my post then.
Actually completely off on pressure, actually 13lbs, but it was a 1 and a 3 involved

It's a good read... partcularly the part about pettit's AST having a stamped filler neck as opposed to other ones having a billet filler neck.... on page 4.
I also don't believe the pettit AST has the restrictor in one of the nozzles like a stock ast

Yeah, it's an important consideration and worth discussing, and it's great to get both sides of the debate. Thanks for your input, guys. Interestingly, the rx7club thread ends on a cliffhanger. Curious to discover the verdict with the restrictor?

I have just changed from a stock AST to one of kinetic's ones (with a restrictor)... the car runs great..... oddly enough my temperatures have come down slightly..... but that could be because I did a better job of burping the coolant than the last place I went to....
All in all I am 100000% happy with kinetics AST

is there a way to install the restrictor after its already been installed in the car?

man ASTs have been covered soooooooooooooooo many times if you search lol
my 2cents= D1 AST from JustJap, $99, add about $30 to weld up the unused nipple, put the factory 0.9bar pressure cap on which fits perfect, happy days.
minimal cost, maximum enjoyment, for everything else... there's mastercard
