I'm looking at finding a new fd engine for this fd I'm looking at purchasing, and am having trouble finding any new, I've found plenty rebuilt ones but Not sure of how reliable the companies are, mainly since I've never heard of them. So does anyone know a good company stateside? or how hard these engines are to rebuild yourself?

2 places you can probably look at.

For an Australian buyer, I would recommend buying directly from a mazda dealer in New Zealand!! You will get a new short block for around the $4500, plus duties (A further 10% GST)..so around $5000-5500 delivered to your door!

For an American, perhaps look at rhdjapan.com They will sell you a new mazda block and send directly to you. (Due to duties, and freight it works out around $500 dearer for an Aussie to buy from RHD)

Another alternative, is to use someone like Pete @ riceracing who can have an engine imported and then rebuilt to a REAL specification ready for you to install.

Of note...the new crate engines are not "great". The engineering specs employed at the mazda factory leave a lot to be desired. I would suggest stripping any new crate engine, and having it deburred internally, balanced, and all seals checked (EG my side seals were cut too short! Well outside recommended tollerances!). Obviously this would also give you an opertunity to upgrade seal types, and clearance / balance / port the engine.

IMO buy a jap import one and get a local rotary shop to give a light rebuild.

light rebuild.

What exactly is a light rebuild?

It seems alot of people rarely go to their 'local' rotor mechanic for a rebuild. Alot of people send their engines half way across Australia, and even half way across the world just so that they could get that perfect rebuild, eg sending their engines to Pete.

If your going to all the trouble of removing the engine and having your car sit on the sideline for months on end like most of us have gone through, you'd want to get it done right the first time.
